In this story, a young Londoner, Jason Cooper, a recent Oxford graduate, come to the New World with academic aspirations. As he drifts west, he learns new skills such as riding, shooting, riverboat travel, cotton and corn growing along with herding livestock. Along the way, Jason instructs impatient and disinterested American schoolboys and attempts to keep up with the eager antics of an adorable, red-headed American girl. In short, he shares just about all of the experiences a young immigrant might be expected to face.
