Coastal Prairie Adventure is the story of Rodney Tompkins and his return to Colorado County. Tompkins, who served as a lieutenant in the Confederate Army, has returned to Gracious Plantation, his family home, to return to his life as a rancher and farmer. Before returning home, however, Rod had spent the first months after the end of the war reading law in the office of his comrade at arms, Sam Thomas, uncle in Roanoke, Virginia. Rod hopes to successfully combine a fledgling law practice with management of the home plantation. On a personal level, Rod seeks out the company of his childhood sweetheart, Miss Betsy Crawford.
