LAVACA HOME LAVACA TALES LAVACA WEST LAVACA ROOTS Local author Rollin Baker has written four more novelettes about adventuresome characters living mostly in our mid-coastal area in the last half of the 18th century. These stories entitled Lavaca Home, Lavaca Tales, Lavaca West and Lavaca Roots focus on doings mostly in the Hallettsville, Texas area. In Lavaca Home and Lavaca Tales, West Point Graduate Jake Herkimer is forced to choose sides during the War Between the States throwing in his lot with the Confederacy. At war's end, Jake and his bride, Dorothy Treadway, return to Lavaca County, raise a family and become active participants in the growth of the county. The setting for Lavaca West and Lavaca Roots is the silver mining area of West Texas and adjacent Northern Mexico. While the characters are fictitious, the events described have historic import. The author follows the lives of four individuals struggling to regain their self-identity and their lives in the aftermath of the Civil War.
